Landscape design that turns your vision into a strategic plan you can see

Carol Loftus is the designer behind Inspired Outdoor Designs. She grew up in Tucson and spent her twenties and thirties in Phoenix before moving to Las Vegas. She knows how different the Sonoran is from the Mojave, and how many people move here, fall for the sunsets and the light, and then watch everything they plant turn brown in the summer.

For most of her career she negotiated on other people's behalf, first in healthcare contracts and later training commercial negotiation teams across the Americas at The Gap Partnership. It meant constant travel. Stepping back from it finally made room for the work she'd been circling for years: something creative, something outdoors.

She has always been a plant and wildlife person, the one who stops on a walk to photograph a flower. And the same frustration kept surfacing among friends and neighbors: they'd buy a home, want the outside to be a place they actually loved, and start hunting for a contractor before thinking through their vision. So they'd fix one corner, then another, never stepping back to plan the whole space. It's one of the biggest investments a family makes, and it lasts as long as the house. It deserves a real plan.

The project that turned the passion into a calling was her own property in Phoenix: an old ranch home on a big lot that nobody had cared for in years. The backyard was bare dirt, patchy grass, and a eucalyptus that a monsoon had knocked down and left where it fell. But there was a mature ruby red grapefruit tree she fell for, and a lot of potential. She planned the space into a set of outdoor rooms: a gathering area with a fireplace and a built-in banquette beside the pool, so you could watch friends swim from a cozy spot, plus quieter corners for reading, for sun, for picking grapefruit and making juice in the summer. She planted trees and palms and watched them mature, and added color with her favorite desert-friendly flowering plants. That gathering area is the terrace photographed at the top of this page.

What she didn't expect was how much it changed the way she lived. Before, the yard was dirt and her evenings were spent indoors. After the redesign, she used the space every night. One favorite memory is a hammock at the side of the yard, her two small dogs, and a starry sky over a place she'd made from nothing.

That's the outcome every project works toward. A desert yard done right becomes an escape. The trick is the craft: reading the sun, mapping the heat, finding the microclimates, choosing plants that will actually thrive instead of struggle. And then there's lighting: most yards go dark at sunset and get forgotten. Layered right, the yard becomes the place everyone drifts toward at night.

It's the difference between a yard you maintain and one you actually live in.

Carol designs and coordinates; she doesn't build, and she doesn't sell materials or mark them up. That means no reason to pad a bid and every reason to get the design right and protect the budget. Material prices are locked in writing before anyone breaks ground, the licensed installer is vetted and managed, and the relationship carries through the first year while the garden fills in. After a career spent negotiating on other people's behalf, being the homeowner's advocate is the part that comes most naturally to her.
